Saint Vincent Health Center Ensures Regulatory Compliance with SIS

June 23, 2009

ATLANTA – Each year hospital operating rooms face increasingly difficult challenges as patient safety requirements from regulatory agencies grow more demanding.  Saint Vincent Health Center (SVHC) in Erie, PA uses a perioperative automation solution, Sunrise Surgery(TM), provided by Eclipsys Corp. and powered by Surgical Information Systems (SIS) to ensure compliance and consistently exceed state and national averages for quality measures.

The OR staff at SVHC face the same challenges that all hospitals share today when it comes to meeting the requirements of regulatory agencies. Organizations such as the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and programs including the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), issue requirements which hospitals must meet in order to be in compliance.  Lynne Yaple, RN, CNOR, clinical system administrator at SVHC, uses an OR solution provided by Surgical Information Systems to keep the OR staff on top of new regulatory requirements.

“The SIS Solution has given us a lot of value in our organization with meeting all of the regulatory body regulations that come out and change yearly,” said Yaple.  “I find that it’s very easy to change and meet those demands.  SIS allows me to use my imagination and to run reports in different ways, which enables me to be creative with the regulatory body demands on nursing and documentation.”

With flexible reporting tools from SIS, SVHC staff can run in-depth reports at any time to review the effectiveness of hospital initiatives and compare them with benchmarks from national programs and agencies.  The system saves both time and money, and allows OR staff at the bedside to devote more time to quality patient care.  Furthermore, custom reports through SIS allow management staff to quickly and easily display compliance with SCIP goals at any time.

“Our strategic initiatives here at Saint Vincent center on quality and safety.  SIS allows us to show compliance with SCIP initiatives and measure hospital initiatives against regulatory standards, such as the National Patient Safety Goals for pre-procedure final time-out,” said SVHC Director of Surgical Services, Maureen Chadwick, RN, MSN, NE-BC.  “It really helps us to ensure compliance and to access perioperative information quickly and effectively.  Also the surgeons are very satisfied with our capability to quickly pull physician-specific data, such as cost-per-case.”
